About MotherSpeak's Mission, Values, and Goals

MotherSpeak's Mission

MotherSpeak fosters cultural and environmental awareness and develops professional skills by sharing stories, talents, and experience.

MotherSpeak's Vision

Networks of individuals and communities sharing, teaching about, and learning from experiences of conflict and war create lasting peace.

MotherSpeak's Values & Goals

  • Meaningful dialog -- talking and istening -- enriches all of our lives and reduces suspicion, prejudice, and negative assumptions.
  • Meaningful work enriches individuals and communities through self-sufficency and self-confidence.
  • Meaningful challenges grow strong, self-directed people to change the world.
  • Meaningful change after the extreme social experiences comes from healing families and communities.

MotherSpeak's Genesis

MotherSpeak formed when a mother's son was deployed to the War on Terror and she traveled to Iraq to visit him on his military base in Balad, north of Baghdad. What she found there prompted her to continue that journey interviewing mothers in war zones including Iraq, Israel and the West Bank, Lebanon, Syria, Afghanistan and the United States. The powerful first-person accounts offer dramatic insight into the impact of war on families and communities and are shared in the book, Long Time Passing: Mothers Speak about War and Terror
